The Anthropologist As Hero
November 16, 2019, 8:30 pm10:00 pm
A Performance by Prima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai
Susan Sontag’s essay, “The Anthropologist As Hero” proposes a new type of anthropologist, one who undergoes a personal catharsis through the submission to the exotic. Barriers between the inside/outside, the exotic/home and the observer/observed, are inverted.
PAM, located on a busy commercial juncture between Figueroa and 58th, in Highland Park offers a porous space between what is public and what is private. Artist Prima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai has created a live-feed video projected into the space, turning PAM into a camera obscura and bringing the outside in. Audiences are invited to share space with four performers who interact with layers of projected images of their cultural legacies and whose movements are punctuated by their stories of belonging.
With the participation of Linda Franke, Justine Melford-Colegate, and Jessica Hyatt.
Prima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai is a transdisciplinary artist, based in Los Angeles, working in performance, video and installation. They investigate the inherently ideological frameworks of our production of knowledge and its dissemination through architecture and urban infrastructures.
