Practical Records Presents Kohinoorgasm, Lykanthea, Diaspoura, The Bedroom Witch (DJ)
April 16, 2019, 9:00 pm
Lykanthea’s Lakshmi Ramgopal has recently transformed from explorations of electro-ambient pop idioms into expansive performances and installations. Her debut EP Migration garnered praise from Noisey, Chicago Tribune, and Public Radio International’s The World for its alchemy of synths, catchy melodies, and Carnatic improvisatory techniques. The record led to a European tour, Leipzig’s Wave-Gotik Treffen, and an opening performance for the 50th anniversary celebrations of Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, where she shared a bill with Billy Corgan, Lupe Fiasco, and Jamila Woods. Amid all this, she completed a PhD at the University of Chicago. Since the death of her maternal grandmother and birth of her niece in 2017, Ramgopal has turned her attention to herself with atavistic questions of motherhood and personal legacy with projects like A Half-Light Chorus, a sound installation she created for Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago’s Lincoln Park Conservatory that featured vocalists imitating the calls of birds from India and Sanskrit literature. These projects accompanied multidisciplinary ensemble shows that herald a shift in Ramgopal’s storytelling—one that eschews electronics and synths and embraces the warmth of the sruti box, unprocessed vocals, and performance art and dance.
Kohinoorgasm (one word: ko-hee-noor-gasm) is the experimental pop music project of queer, mixed, desi artist Josephine Shetty. Shetty uses minimal dance beats and susurrate vocals as a cathartic way to communicate her opposition to misogyny, war, and cultures of conquest and to heal from anxiety and abuse. Danceable drums and dreamy synth sequences loop beneath repetitive English and Hindi lyrics to create hypnotic environments in which Shetty hopes listeners can reflect and replenish. She has performed at SXSW, Berkeley Art Museum, The Echo, and several other universities, museums, music venues, and DIY spaces across the US and Europe. Josephine is born and based in Los Angeles, CA.
Diaspoura is a downtempo electronic producer and new media artist from a highway hotel in rural South Carolina. Their first release Demonstrations was an experimental project documenting lived experience as a queer femme of color buried in the poor Deep South. They released the emotionally charged track “GTF” (get the fuck) on Tr*mp’s inauguration, and their newest two-track release Traumaporn is a developed study of sounds encompassing both power and vulnerability using iconic rigid beats, bells, and dense harmonies. Diaspoura’s latest video, released on NYLON Magazine, “explains what it means to be a real ally” and features an entire cast and crew of visionary QTPOC under 30.
The Bedroom Witch Cast as the misunderstood maker of the veil, the Bedroom Witch lyrically chants spells alluding to an inevitable apocalypse while embodying the creative exhaustion of isolation. Her aesthetics build on dark pop ballads, an ominous execution of chord progressions through mysterious allure and a danceable haunting that produces the nostalgic agony of Hell/Limbo theories.
